Carbon Offset – A Great Way To Save The Environment

Carbon offset is a huge help to save the world from the catastrophic effects of ecological deterioration and global warming by its attempts to decrease carbon emissions in large industries and manufacturing units, as well as at an individual level.

Carbon offset is a way of reducing the emission of hazardous greenhouse gases by using different means like sustained reforestation initiatives, alternative and renewable energy supply etc. The carbon credits scheme of the 2005 Kyoto Protocol, an international environmental treaty signed by 170 nations in 2005 fixes the emission limits for countries, which then determines permissible emissions by industrial units.

The Protocol states that entities emitting a huge quantity of carbon dioxide must restrict their CO2 emissions to prescribed levels, or else make payment of a carbon tax, which is an environmental tax on harmful emissions, or alternatively purchase carbon credits certificates that can be transacted in the market. Carbon credits, which were conceived prior to carbon offset, are the most preferred and cheap option for manufacturing businesses releasing more than the allowed limit of greenhouse gases, with one credit equivalent to one tonne of carbon dioxide released into the air. Large organisations are becoming a part of the global carbon-neutral campaign and purchasing carbon credits to make an impact on customers, investors and corporate partners.

Another novel instrument, carbon offset, has paved the way for an excellent financial chance, particularly in the third world countries, as the system provides smooth financing for eco-friendly projects that are designed to help reduce the overall carbon footprint in the world. It therefore aids in promoting environmental projects related to reforestation, conservation of resources, and clean energy alternatives like tidal energy, solar energy, geothermal energy, etc.

Ordinary people are also doing their bit and are buying carbon offset to make the environment cleaner and to generate awareness about environment conservation. Buying carbon offset is straightforward and can be conveniently implemented on the internet through one of the many carbon offset provider websites; but it should be ensured that your investment is making real impact through proper projects.

However, we must remember that buying carbon offset does not take away our responsibilities, and that all of us can perform a significant role in decreasing our carbon footprints by making minor changes to our daily lives. Minor steps like switching off electrical devices and appliances when not in use, replacing fossil fuels by renewable fuels like biodiesel, and using LED lighting and low-energy bulbs can go a long way in reducing global emissions.

Carbon offset is still not a familiar word for a layman. Mass awareness on the issue through widespread education is needed to bring us a few steps closer to a clean and healthy environment.
