Enterprise Carbon and Energy Management Systems Represent Information Technology’s Future
Why is it that the definition of efficiency is not always encompassing, but rather more selective? Senior management and accountants tend to measure efficiency according to the organization’s mission statement, the reason why it exists. Efficiency may be measured according to use of raw materials, but traditionally that has excluded energy. In a critical world, it’s important to be aware of all performance parameters.
Information technology is always going to be at the cutting edge of developments and proud to provide organizations with a way to track, measure, decipher or determine the variety of different metrics. Often, however these systems are not known to interact with one another, but now, as the organization must be fully aware of its performance by any definition, enterprise carbon and energy management systems are emerging.
While productivity was once an acceptable benchmark for efficiency within a typical organization, this historical approach to business is now no longer okay. The society will now insist that a company becomes sustainable and uses energy efficiency as a critical part of its very existence.
To approach the issue of efficiency in holistic terms, an organization must realize that it needs to determine performance of the individual assets it owns. Very rarely have such assets been correctly optimized and their energy use revealed, but this level of comprehensive reporting will be a staple of the commercial environment in future.
Legislatures around the world are poised to write laws bringing energy use and carbon emissions great publicity. Regardless of the size of the company it must realize that it will be called upon for action. Enterprise carbon and energy management systems have been designed to help this organization integrate data, reporting its findings and taking action to improve as appropriate.
Once configured, an enterprise carbon and energy management system will be able to project total energy efficiency for the company and help it to move towards its goal. Many do not realize that carbon is likely to become a tradable commodity with a price on its head. As such, it will need to be added to the raw cost of buying the energy to start off with and it goes without saying that the organization that achieves energy efficiency will reap additional benefits.
For the company to realistically and with credibility call itself sustainable, it must redefine its very composition. In addition to determining its organizational boundaries, it must identify all sources and scopes of emissions, including those associated with supply chains. This is a quite complex undertaking.
This is the start of a new decade and will be a watershed for the majority of organizations. They are just emerging from a brutal recession, which calls for realignment by itself, but as the carbon economy is now here, total reorganization is likely.

- Enterprise Carbon and Energy Management Systems Promote a Comprehensive Approach
Recent research has shown us that only one out of two organizations is really aware of the need to become sustainable, let alone how to go about achieving this. This is remarkable as it appears that legislation will arrive in the not-too-distant future to force such compliance. As such, media is paying a lot of attention to this going forward. Compare this to those organizations who, as innovators, have already taken the steps to become sustainable and are using enterprise carbon and energy management systems effectively to help them with their goal....
- Companies Adopt Enterprise Carbon and Energy Management Systems
There is no doubt that organizations consider that they are efficient, but when they refer to that word they have been quite selective. Certainly, productivity is everything and when it comes to comparing the output of a particular asset against given benchmarks, much attention is given. Such feedback however does not address the issue of energy efficiency, but that is about to change....
