How To Recover Deleted Files Easily
Most people don’t think about how to recover deleted files until they are gone. As the panic sets in and a person who has lost an important document or several pages of a paper that is due the next day, most people’s minds go blank.
But, before starting to write a resignation letter or thinking up a reason for not having the project completed, take a moment to try some recovery tips that may help.
It is important to remember that in computer land nothing is ever really lost, destroyed, or gone. A good way to think about computer files or documents is to picture a meeting or conference where there are tons of people walking around with name tags. The person you’re talking to is “Sue.” You’re having a nice chat and you hand her a piece of paper for a meeting later. Suddenly and without warning, Sue rips off her name tag and slips into the crowd. Now, Sue’s not lost, gone, or beamed up. She’s somewhere in a crowd of people and you’re going to need to find her based on physical characteristics instead of a name tag.
Your file or document has just ripped of it’s identification tag and is wandering around the room until the computer makes it leave. You have an opportunity to recover the file if you can track it down and stick it’s identification back on it’s little label. There are lots of favorite spots that “no-name” files like to hang out. Just take a few minutes to visit each spot.
Check to make sure that it wasn’t accidentally slipped into the recycle or trash bin. In most cases it won’t be there, but it doesn’t hurt to check. Next, check in at the usual hot, no-name file spots. Check your temp folder. There will usually be two of them and you may have to do a search to find one or both of them. If it’s not there, check in your history file. Next, go your recent folder. Bear in mind that the recent folder has different names depending on the version of the system you’re working on, so you may need to click the help icon to find out what it’s called in your version. Next, run a search for *. ASD on your system search feature. This is what auto saved files are saved as. If your file is there click on it select open, (nothing will happen), reboot your computer and open word, excel, or the program you were working in, and the file will show up on the left for recovery.
If you lose a lot of files or don’t want to go through this ever again, you might want to get some recovery software. There are recovery programs for free or you can purchase a recovery program. The programs will take the effort out of finding the file and make it relatively easy to recover any lost or deleted files.
