What Is Industrial Design?

Industrial design seeks to combine both art and science for working upon a product in a way that there is an addition to its commercial value through enhanced appearance and functionality. Such designing can be done before a product is formally launched or later for improving upon the product.

Industrial design primarily focuses on how the customer will relate to a particular product. It is all about value optimization of a product in the mind of the consumers and so they are able to relate to the product. The value of a product can be enhanced by making important additions to the utility or the appearance of the product, which helps the product to entice the consumers to purchase it.

This requires an elaborate research into the purchasing habits of the consumer, which can then be considered by the designers of the product. Then come activities like drawing, model making, prototyping, and testing, before the item is considered ready for mass production. Nowadays, the designers are increasingly using techniques like 3D software and CAD applications for dealing with these jobs.

The primary objective of industrial design is enhancement of the very essence of the product. Designers see how sturdy, useful, ergonomic and user-friendly a product can be made, besides working on its aesthetic features like sound and colour, such as the ring tones in a cell phone. In fact, a designer can even reduce the production costs greatly by making required improvements in the design.

Industrial design has a much larger scope than the above mentioned aspects, as it even extends to things like study of the market for the product, its proper packaging and the consumers’ expected response to the designing. That is why industrial designers undergo years of special training before they work on a real project.

Some of the renowned industrial designers of the present age are Jonathan Ive, who is the designer of the iMac; Brooks Stevens, the original designer of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and Raymond Loewy, famous for the Coca-Cola bottle.
